My End of Year "JAZZ" List 05'

今年爵士相關唱片的採購照例佔音樂預算的最大宗，但新作品其實買不多。我一直都是Avant-garde / Free Jazz迷，對Fusion / Bop / Hard Bop也維持一定的興趣，所以針對FMP、Hat Hut(HatOLOGY)、Impulse、Black Saint作系統地收集依然是我這幾年採買的焦點。自從踏入歐陸爵士樂的世界後，部分獨立廠牌如Label Bleu、Sketch、Egea等所發行的作品也納入個人收藏版圖中。

今年除了幾位老將(Charlie Haden / Dave Holland)的Progressive Big Band作品表現依舊不俗外，Blue Note鑑賞家重發系列算在我心目中大獲全勝。Blue Note的爵士樂，從封面、解說到音樂內容本來就是我favorite，它們六十年代中期以前的發行向來是品質保證，Don Cherry及Andrew Hill作品再問世使一直不敢大手筆購進Mosaic套裝專輯的我也能一覽六十年代如初生之犢而又生猛精采的前衛爵士樂。除此之外今年美國爵士樂銷售大贏家是作古以久的John Coltrane及Thelonious Monk，他們的重發專輯都獲得了極大肯定，也給了新生代不小的壓力。放眼明年聆聽計畫還是在擴增接觸Jazz的廣度，除了現在主攻的歐陸爵士樂外，所謂的西岸爵士或當今比較紅的主流爵士應該會逐漸得到我的青睞。

今年已高齡七十八的Sheila Jordan與法國鋼琴家Serge Forté於十二月中在台中爵士音樂節閉幕當晚現場演奏及演唱是整年度最令人滿足與感動的現場經驗。所以我的年度Jazz藝人就頒給Sheila Jordan囉。

2005年對於老前衛搖滾迷來說算值得紀錄的一年，The Mars Volta等新型態樂團的爆紅、Kraftwerk與Kate Bush發行新作，加上國外相關專門討論區如雨後春筍般地興起，直接間接促使前衛搖滾又成為媒體談論的話題。Van Der Graaf Generator也發表了他們睽違二十八年來的全新雙CD大碟「Present」，不但向市場召告元老級Progressive Rock樂團重生，對於喜愛的Progressive Rock朋友也是一項極具意義的回歸。

1967年成立於英國的Van Der Graaf Generator("VDGG")是以所謂"Vocal Progressive"表現手法聞名的樂團。Peter Hammil身兼樂團靈魂與創作重心，早年與Peter Gabriel及David Bowie的舞台表演皆同樣具備匠心獨具的效果及魅力。也由於專輯大都在Hammill的嗓音表現下作文章，與當年一般樂團以搖滾器樂編制掛帥的樂團風氣並不相同，因此商業口碑累積較慢，專輯經常叫好而不叫座。以致部份樂迷認為他們是"second-tier"的英國前衛搖滾團，與Gentle Giant、The Soft Machine、Jethro Tull、Renaissance、Caravan等並列，然而地位卻略遜於Pink Floyd、King Crimson、Yes、Emerson, Lake & Palmer或Genesis等等所謂第一級團體。這見解不盡然正確，VDGG的藝術價值當然可以與Yes或King Crimson等同齊觀的。

他們長篇樂曲如「Killer」(該團最出名的單曲)、「A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers」、「Meurglys III」無論在編曲與演奏上都十分特別，完全符合大一般樂迷對前衛搖滾樂曲的認知 -- 主題龐大而繁雜，樂曲整體架構張力強、渲染力十足、自成一格，主唱收放自如、表情生動的嗓音擅於讓聽眾自然置身樂曲所想營造的情情境裡，需要聽眾高度想像力才有辦法欣賞。VDGG並無專職吉他手是音樂特點之一，反倒樂團在某些專輯中加入薩克斯風或管風琴的演奏以增強效果。也由於VDGG成員曾經歷多次變動，樂團成員各具專長，使得VDGG不拘泥於曲風方式，民謠、爵士、電子與古典等元素巧妙結合，顯地豐富而多采。

VDGG是需要acquired taste與深入聆聽的搖滾樂團。他們音樂乍聽之下或許並不容易上手，但特殊內涵與意境慢慢地會帶給樂迷極大滿足。記得七十年代中期以後Punk勢力的步步進侵與跟Progressive Rock的水火不容的故事嗎? 當時龐克先鋒團體The Sex Pistols的主唱Johnny Rotten喜歡穿著一件"I Hate Pink Floyd"的T恤象徵著前衛搖滾時代結束、潮流改變的風向球，但其實Hammill算是少數Rotten曾點名欣賞的藝人呢!

這幾年以來搖滾樂佔我CD架的空間愈來愈少，一方面因為好貨難尋，另方面則是我持續把焦點擺向某些更具野心的爵士樂與世界音樂。 到現在，只有市面上少見的老搖滾樂團重發或某歐洲迷幻團再出土才會引起我的購買慾。 我的習慣是到年底媒體與樂友們紛紛公佈年終之際才開始依照大家推薦程度尋找適合自己口味的當年度音樂專輯。 今年搖滾樂品質依舊參差不齊，話雖如此倒還是會有令人驚喜不已的新人佔據版面，表示優秀作品 (遲早) 會冒出頭的。

我是一個喜愛七十年代老搖滾更勝於電音舞曲的樂迷，近年搖滾樂的偏好就是那種重技巧與概念的前衛搖滾或是後搖滾，對於所謂花草系或緩飆的接受度相對較低。 這兩年來在前衛搖滾圈最值得一提的The Mars Volta、Porcupine Tree、Muse、Coheed & Cambria等團所直接間接串聯引起所謂的"Nu-Prog"或"New Prog" (emo + punk + prog....) 開始在一小群樂迷中發燒而造成波瀾，除專輯在小部份社群大賣外也造成不小話題。

今年英國老牌前衛搖滾團Van Der Graaf Generator復出，Kraftwerk大規模巡迴加上現場專輯發表，加上前述新樂團專輯熱賣等所引發的復古風潮曾在許多主流媒體 (如New York Times專文跟Boston Globe專文) 與討論區引領風騷一陣子，在樂迷間也引發不小爭議。 比方說衛報於今年四月的一份報導"Epic songs. Symphonic key changes. Psychedelic cover art. Get used to it -because prog is the rock that just won't die"包含了數個樂團成員與鼓手Bill Bruford的訪問，描述一開始新興樂團在主流音樂產業外奮戰的過程。 它還提出一個挺有趣的論點，就是現在與從前proggers背景不同的地方: 早期英國前衛搖滾的成員大都是中產階級背景青年，具有良好正統或音樂素養，偏好上通天文下達地理的長篇文藝搖滾。 而近年崛起的Nu-Prog新樂團成員則來自各種社會背景，相較前輩起來不吝於擁抱更多音樂元素，寫作體裁也完全不受拘束。

其實無論長篇前衛搖滾到底有沒有真的復興 (media hype或許也是一部份原因)，每隔個幾年總會有幾個團玩的音樂走向偏實驗或搞即興，如九十年代整個後搖滾風潮與近幾年美國團如The Flaming Lips、Mercury Rev、Wilco，或是英國團Radiohead、Mansun、Muse部分專輯都讓我們這些願意接受新聲音的老Prog迷受到鼓舞進而愛不釋手。 或許樂壇總需要新聲帶崛起來滿足老樂迷的胃口，這樣對我也就夠了。

在這份回顧裡，年度藝人代表著個人認為當年表現最印象深刻與心目中地位崇高值得一提的藝人，年度專輯則是整年評價最高或最常聽的唱片。2003年我心目中的Artist /Album of the Year分別是「Lou Reed」與「The Hidden Cameras -- The Smell of Our Own」; 2004年的Artist /Album of the Year則為「Brian Wilson」與「Ghost -- Hypnotic Underground」。 2005年照例買地不多，想把今年買的專輯們 (或當年台灣才做商業發行) 的搖滾樂唱片做一個簡短回顧。 底下列出來的都是符合我今年比較常聽的專輯，也當作是自己聆聽紀錄囉。

不只寫文章，Lester Bangs也會唱歌喔!

1977年，也是叛客開始席捲英美時，Lester Bangs在紐約替村聲寫稿空檔間曾玩票短暫組個團巡迴演唱，也就是Birdland。1979年愚人節當天Birdland於electric ladyland錄製了幾首歌，由Bangs擔任主唱，Joey Ramone的哥哥Micky Leigh彈吉他。想必他與團員們並沒有對龐克事業十分認真 -- Bangs嗓音實在稱不上有啥特色，短短二十五分鐘音樂有點punk有點pop，九首歌每首都很簡單，相對也很難讓人留下太多印象。那張專輯在Bangs死後才有唱片公司發行，廠牌叫做DIONYSUS Records，應該是靠Bangs死後庇蔭才有重見天日的機會，也算是讓欣賞Bangs天馬行空文采的書迷(或搖滾考古學家們)得償所望。

讀過他撰寫文案理印象深刻的是Clash的盒裝"Clash on Broadway" (1991)，洋洋灑灑看來暢快淋漓。對了，我對Birdland專輯印象最深刻的歌也就是The Clash曾翻唱過的Sonny Curtis名曲"I Fought The Law"。

The Boo Radleys -- Giant Steps

早年剛開始用力聽音樂時曾一直保有把BBS或網路上把中英文樂評印下來摺疊到booklet小冊子的習慣。後來一方面因為懶，還發現夾在CD殼裡保存十多年的紙片或海綿反倒會讓CD本身受潮或被破壞，於是這項持續十多年的好習慣在美國的第二年宣告結束。這幾年雖然唱片照買，但那聽到好音樂拿著實體CD/LP的滿足感、及仔細聽邊閱讀文字充實音樂知識的熱情卻已隨年齡增長悄悄消失了。

受到galeer一篇文章啟發，昨晚我才把久違The Boo Radleys的Giant Steps拿起來重聽。發覺當年那張昌彥代理的介紹小紙片與樂評還留著，CD表面有若干霉斑但不影響聆聽。回想起以前，用省吃儉用攢下來的零用錢買到一張好的CD是再幸福不過了。好的音樂早中晚都聽不膩，彷彿可以從中不斷汲取養分般，所以從一張唱片裡外就可以看出我對一張專輯的喜愛程度，也代表著特定時期的成長軌跡。

The Boo Radleys與My Bloody Valentine算是我啟蒙英倫shoegazing世代的重要樂團，也讓當時醉心於老搖滾的我找到可以與自己生活的時代接軌的好東西。當時的The Boo Radleys從The Beatles、Beach Boys到Velvet Underground的影響都能共治一爐、巧妙運用及發揚光大。曾在某段國外樂評中讀過讚美Boo Radleys的文字，指他們具有Primal Scream般的跳躍節奏、如My Bloddy Valentine般地具創造力，及兼具Oasis清新悅耳旋律的英國九十年代樂團。說地可是一點兒也沒錯。

睡前把它刻意放大音量從第一首"I Hang Suspended"開始放(之前睡前都在主攻一些Bebop/Hard Bop的東西)，接續中段幾首單曲及實驗音牆到"I've Lost the Reason"，在終曲"The White Noise Revisited"結束後完成一整段充滿著美妙旋律的迷幻旅程。從頭到尾一氣呵成真是暢快淋漓，可謂真金不怕火煉，經典的確能挺地住時光的考驗。還是覺得早年如同海綿般拼命吸收新音樂精華的那種感覺還真是美好啊。

其中，私心喜愛The White Noise Revisited的歌詞 ，讀了讀竟然還蠻符合當下的心情 ，哈!!

My Beethoven Symphony no.9 Collection

貝九是我最愛最愛的曲目，曾陪我度過不少失意或心煩的時光。自首演以來就影響者無數樂迷，它的歷史意義與內涵上也堪稱為音樂史上深刻與激勵人心的曲子。我打算把這這首交響曲作為送給自己而立之年的生日禮物，不但藉以勉勵自己，也為十多年來聽音樂歷程的軌跡下個註腳。

我的貝九聆聽經驗由念國中時堂姊送的卡拉揚版CD開始的，自從聽到Bernstein率領多國樂團所演奏的柏林音樂會版之後就成為獨一無二的個人終極荒島曲目。雖說沒有刻意收集但到今天也收了八十幾種種版本，其中LP與CD約略各半，或許哪天我還會有機會挑戰一百張也說不定。儘管數量繁多少部分到現在還沒機會放，每次聆聽一種詮釋似乎都能讓我發掘出新的東西有新的體會，這也是為何願意擁有多張版本的原因之一。以下是我手裡的貝多芬第九號收藏，以指揮家姓氏排序，星號表示為LP版本。

Rembering Lennon

認識我比較深的朋友大都知道我最崇敬的音樂家只有兩位，一是Beethoven，另一位就是John Lennon。Lennon在二十五年前的今天(Dec 8, 1980)在紐約上西區家門口 (Dakota Building)遭遇不幸，不曉得若Lennon活到今天能否影響這個世界更多?

每年這時候把他的LP唱片與CD拿出來聽一聽似乎已經變成一種儀式，今年當然也不例外。明天下班後要去台中度個小假順便過過生日，帶什麼音樂過去放呢? 那就來點激烈前衛的Sometime in New York City/Live Jam吧，雖然不常聽，但光想像Plastic Ono Band與The Mothers of Invention的組合想必會很過癮的。也把Live in New York City帶去好了，是的，那張CD裡有那首Imagine等可以讓我吟詠許久的名曲。
