My Favorite Double Albums

一提到Double Albums大家的概念通常就脫離不了諸如概念專輯、長篇史詩、龐然大物等印象。Double Albums表示著曲目內容長度超過一般專輯長度所以得以雙唱片的形式發行，因此發表Double Albums的樂團不見得就適合被歸類在前衛搖滾這領域，Double Albums當然也不必然代表著音樂品質。以搖滾或爵士樂作品來說，可能因為整套作品以某種長篇概念或故事手法貫穿，也或許純粹是因為當時灌錄的好歌太多難以取捨，所以以行兩張LP (後來時間更長的就演變為兩張CD) 。

在六七十年代，這種雙唱片經常代表著這位藝人的巔峰表現，不過也通常被樂評視為藝術極品與洪水猛獸的一線間。其實33又3分之1轉黑膠唱片的收錄時間限制還直接影響了許多音樂創作者思考編曲譜曲的概念，所以LP對西方流行音樂史的影響其實很大。前衛搖滾樂團為突顯概念工整宏偉與為求耐聽，經常推出這種雙專輯來表現出他們的巧思及卓越不群。也由於雙唱片大都是票房毒藥 (六七十年代市場主流仍為45轉單曲唱片)，所以發行雙專輯的樂團無不嘔心瀝血，非得信心滿滿地把最完美一面表達出來。

再補充一下，以往雙專輯之所以迷人還在於它的封面封套與內頁可以更多元化，比方說封面繪圖能清晰更漂亮，gatefold設計也能更具彈性等等。Double Albums的黃金年代早已遠去，唱片流行規格也從LP轉化成CD以容納更多時間與創意，不過LP那種可供玩賞的樂趣也就一去不復返了。目前為止心中無可取代的Double Albums多以搖滾樂爵士樂的長篇幅概念專輯為主，少數為現場錄音。以下是各年代十五張參考名單:
